Cambridge University Alumni Magazine
Smith won a three-way pitch to redesign, art direct and then design CAM - Cambridge University's flagship alumni magazine. Smith produced over twenty issues over a seven year period for CUDAR, winning gold in the CASE International Design Awards. It was also awarded the Robert Silby Magazine of the Year - the first time a magazine from outside the USA had won the honour. Smith was responsible for providing art direction for the main features, picture researching and commissioning original photography and illustration: taking the publication from manuscript through to print. The central theme was 'intelligence': well-considered, highly-crafted creative interpretations which sometimes had a hint of wit – visual solutions for an informed and 'opinion-forming' audience could appreciate.
CAM magazine was distributed to approx. 250,000 Cambridge University alumni all over the world. Art Director Paul Oldman utilised a braod range of styles – driven always by the narrative text, working closely with the editor, CUDAR and individual Cambridge University colleges. Smith was commissioned to redesign and refresh the maagazine design in 2016.
