As professionals, designers have to accept that a balance between healthy competition and fair assessment has to be achieved if the industry is to improve its professional standing and designers don't spend the bulk of their time on free and potentially unprotected creative thinking. For now, we, like most agencies accept free creative pitching as an industry tradition that isn't going to go away, and we always try and treat it in a pragmatic and balanced manner.
What we do promise is that, when we free pitch, we treat the project as an opportunity for Smith to showcase what we do best, intelligently applied thinking, delivering targeted creative solutions. Here is an example of what one of our clients thought of a Smith creative pitch response.
Corporate Events Manager
The Royal Academy of Arts (Former Manager at Arts & Business East)
"Smith impressed me from the very beginning with their sound grasp of our objectives when they pitched for our awards marketing. The range of options that were presented were of an extremely high standard, creative and very clearly fitted to the brief they were issued with. In fact, I would have been delighted with any of the 5 ideas submitted, being presented with so much choice was highly refreshing. Smith are able to go beyond producing beautifully designed material by partnering their creative talents with an intelligent and a perceptive understanding of what our desired outcomes and reasoning behind our events were. This naturally made them extremely pleasurable and easy to work with.
They are highly professional, skilled and capable of creating thought-provoking, imaginative and exciting designs. Smith helped to shape the overall identity of our awards, working within a restrictive budget whilst not compromising on the quality and standard of design; they also produced a brochure that had a dual purpose so that it had a longer shelf-life than the evening of the event; a year on, it is still being used. Without a doubt they played a large part in the success of our first awards ceremony and I would certainly use them again if the opportunity arose."
